The urban development of Marl after 1945 was a much-noticed example of forward-looking urban development with modern infrastructure, innovative architecture and, above all, lots of greenery. A structured and relaxed city structure for more than 100,000 inhabitants was planned, in which the incorporated districts would grow together with new residential and commercial areas and these would be connected to a new city center. Marl never reached this number of inhabitants and the plans had to be readjusted, but the idea of the "industrial city in the countryside" with outstanding architecture can still be seen today.

Starting from the regional level, the development lines of urban development after 1945 are traced in the lecture and illustrated using some planning examples.
