Aktuell ist die Künstlerin nach einem halbjährigen Stipendium des Goethe Institutes in Kyoto, Japan, wieder zurück in Deutschland. Anne Pöhlmann spricht darüber, was Fotografie heute ist, welche Erfahrungen sie in Japan gemacht hat und wie sie selbst mit dem Medium Fotografie arbeitet:

The artist is back in Germany after a half-year scholarship from the Goethe Institute in Kyoto, Japan. Anne Pöhlmann talks about what photography is today, what experiences she has made in Japan and how she, herself, works with the medium of photography:

 

Alltägliche Anwendungen von fotografischen Bildern wie im urbanen Raum oder in Print-Werbung sind Ausgangspunkte für viele meiner künstlerischen Arbeiten. Seit drei Jahren drucke ich meine Fotografien auf unterschiedliche Textilien. Dabei stelle ich insbesondere das Verhältnis von fotografischem Bild und seiner Repräsentation als einem zwei dimensionalem, flachen Druck in Frage. In diesen neuen Arbeiten fließen und falten sich die Bilder entsprechend dem Material auf das sie gedruckt sind.

Everyday applications of photographs such as in urban space or in print advertising are the starting points for many of my artistic works. For three years I have been printing my photographs on different fabrics. In particular, I question the relationship between the photographic image and its representation as a two-dimensional flat print. In these new works the images flow and fold according to the material on which they are printed.

 

Die Auswahl des Bildträgers ist für mich eng an meine künstlerischen Konzepte gebunden. Bildträger können heute sehr verschiedene Materialien wie Textilien, Glas, Kunststoff, Papier aber auch Keramik, Holz oder sogar Beton sein. Es gibt durch die aktuellen technischen Entwicklungen - auch durch die Benutzung von Internet und Computer - keinen Grund, warum Fotografie im Kunstkontext hauptsächlich in klassischer Weise auf Papier gedruckt und gerahmt an die Wand gehängt wird. 

The selection of the picture carrier is closely linked to my artistic concepts. Image carriers can today be very different materials such as textiles, glass, plastic, paper but also ceramics, wood or even concrete. Through the lastest technical developments - also through the use of Internet and computer - there is no reason why photography in the art context is mainly printed in classical manner on paper and framed on the wall.

 

In meiner Auffassung handelt es sich um eine Art Übersetzungsprozess, wenn ein fotografisches Bild auf irgendeine Art von Material gedruckt wird - egal ob analog oder digital. Dieser Prozess verändert sich gerade extrem in den alltäglichen Anwendungen von Fotografie und verändert  auch die Art und Weise, wie wir fotografische Bilder formulieren oder wahrnehmen. 

In my opinion, this is a kind of translation process when a photographic image is printed on some kind of material - whether analogue or digital. This process is changing very much in the everyday applications of photography and also changes the way we formulate or perceive photographic images.
