RES PUBLICA

a public wall for Marl

img
The project "Res Publica" reflects the transformation process of architecture and the art-on-construction works of postwar modernism. Marl exemplifies a city that is home to a multitude of public buildings influenced  by the post-war modern era - schools, the town hall, the indoor pool. Most of these, built in the 1950s to 1970s, architectures were supplemented by art-on-construction works. These works are partly so connected to the architecture, that today they are not recognized by the  viewer as works of art. Since many of the architectures are in need of refurbishment, the question arises of how to handle these buildings. Often, a complete demolition of the architecture is decided, which means the same fate for the firmly anchored art-on-construction works - especially since they are not perceived as works of art. For the project "Res Publica" these art-on-construction works are to be made public again. That means researched and documented, in the form of an excursion or guidance again considered etc. An artistic work in public space should initiate the discussion and the attention. At the vacancy, on which the indoor pool of 1964 once stood, a temporary wall is to be installed. The marking of this place is central - here the question arises significantly. The place stands for the transformation process - the demolished indoor pool of 1964, the vacant school building next door from 1966 and the town hall of 1966, which is about to be renovated. Three architectures of the 1960s. For the installed public wall, a wall painting is initially to be developed, which is based in its design and technology on the historical role models. In terms of craftsmanship, it would be worthwhile if the wall could be built in the same way as the historical limestone architecture, thus creating a direct reference to the neighboring former school. The wall work could be done as a sgraffito work. For the masonry wall further conceptual uses could be planned over a longer period of time. The project, including the researched historical works, is to be summarized in a publication, thus fundamentally documenting the discussion. At the same time, the historical moment should be photographically recorded.

Projected duration until June, changes possible.
