Art Award of Kunststiftung NRW - Nam June Paik Award 2023
Winner 2023: Camille Norment
As the largest independent funding institution in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Kunststiftung NRW has been awarding its international Art Award - Nam June Paik Award - for 20 years. In 2023, the foundation redesigned the award - with the selection and implementation of an outstanding site-specific work of art. This year the Kunststiftung NRW cooperates with the Skulpturenmuseum Marl for the art prize. An international nominating jury was appointed for the art prize of the Kunststiftung NRW 2023. The nominated artists were invited to develop a design for the Skulpturenpark in Marl. An international selection jury then decided on the winning project.
In 2023, artist Camille Norment (lives and works in Oslo) will receive the prestigious award. The prize money is 25,000 euros. In its justification, the selection jury praised the "possibility of an immersive experience through a soundscape of polyphonic voice composition" in Camille Norment's project. The work offers a new perspective on the park and invites visitors to interact physically and sonically with the surroundings.
Camille Norment (*1970 in Silver Spring, Maryland) deals with the perception of sound and the associated spaces of experience. In her drawings, installations, performances and compositions, she refers aesthetically and conceptually to the notion of cultural psychoacoustics. She defines this expression as exploring socio-cultural phenomena through sound and music, such as those related to revolution, evolution, power structures, and post-human systems.
The public award ceremony will take place on Sunday, 27 August 2023, in the presence of the Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ina Brandes, at the Grimme Institute in Marl. Camille Norment will be there for the opening on August 27th and will present her work Glass Pavilion Marl in an artist talk together with museum director Georg Elben in the Skulpturenpark Marl from 2:30 p.m. Admission is free.
