Urban Lights Ruhr

img
After the stations Bergkamen, Hamm and Hagen, the sculpture city of the Ruhr area will become an experimental field for lighting art in the autumn of 2017: Marl. Marl is not only the home of an ever-growing collection of sculptures. The city center, characterized by its brutal architecture, is also almost museal.

In its fourth edition, Urban Lights Ruhr explores and transforms the urban space around the Marler Center - Creilerplatz, Skulpturenpark, Marler Stern with eight artistic interventions. The artistic work of internationally renowned artists opens up new perspectives on the existing architectural and urban structures. Between dystopia and utopia, the interventions provide ideas for the reinterpretation and revival of the protected ensemble.

Starting point for the artistic debate are topics such as the connection of the urban center to the surrounding city, the new development of the old cemetery transformed into the sculpture park, the revival of the Creilerplatz or the relationship between the city and the Marler Stern. The material light is to be the focus of the development of the artistic work in order to revive the urban situation of the place and to awaken it from its sleepy sleep. In addition to the art project in the public space, the Glaskasten Marl shows works from the collection and at the opening is a re-release of George Brecht's "Motor Vehicle Sundown (Event)" (1960).

→ A project by Urban Arts Ruhr and the Skulpturmuseum Glaskasten Marl in cooperation with FH Dortmund / Department of Scenography.
