Post-war modernist architecture doesn't have the best reputation. In the 1950s to 1980s, the buildings in Germany's cities were primarily what today often is referred to as »steel boxes and concrete monsters«. But are the buildings really that unaesthetic?
The lecture looks at the architecture of this time from a different perspective and focuses on Marl: In what context did they come into being? What distinguishes building forms, design, building materials and construction methods? Where are typical buildings and where are more average examples?

V.-Prof. dr Alexandra Apfelbaum is a freelance historian for art and architecture. Since 2018 she has held the deputy professorship for history and theory of architecture and the city at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. She is also co-founder and chair of the board of the Initiative ruhrmoderne e.V. Her focus are the interfaces between architecture and art of the 20th century with a focus on North Rhine-Westphalia and the post-war period. She has also curated and published numerous exhibitions and publications on architects and their work.

Baukultur in Marl is organized by the Skulpturenmuseum and the Adult Education Center in cooperation with the ruhrmoderne e.V. initiative.
